Research abstract

THE OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP A SERIES OF INTERACTIVE SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL MODULES FOR THE TEACHING OF CARDIOVASCULAR NUTRITION TO SENIOR MEDICAL STUDENTS. WHEN FULLY DEVELOPED, THE MODULES CAN ALSO BE USED BY RESIDENTS AND PHYSICIANS IN GENERAL MEDICAL PRACTICE. THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE IN PHASE I IS TO DEVELOP A COMPUTERIZED CATALOG OF EXISTING EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS ON CARDIOVASCULAR NUTRITION. THESE INCLUDE PRINTED MATERIALS, SUCH AS PROFESSIONAL MANUALS, CONSUMER EDUCATION MATERIALS, TEXTBOOKS, AND JOURNAL ARTICLES, AS WELL AS OTHER MEDIA MATERIALS SUCH AS VIDEOTAPES, SLIDE PRESENTATIONS, AND FILMS. THE COMPUTERIZED FILE WILL BE INDEXED BY CONTENT, INSTRUCTIONAL MEDIUM, TARGET AUDIENCE, CONTACT HOURS, DEVELOPER, YEAR OF DEVELOPMENT, AVAILABILITY, AND COST. IN ADDITION TO THE COMPUTERIZED CATALOG OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, A PLAN FOR DEVELOPING AND TESTING THE COMPUTER-ASSISTED INSTRUCTION (CAI) MODULES IN PHASE II WILL BE DEVELOPED IN PHASE I. THE TECHNICAL OBJECTIVE OF PHASE I WILL INCLUDE A DEMONSTRABLE INTERACTIVE PROGRAM FOR A SIMPLE CASE STUDY. THIS WILL ILLUSTRATE NOT ONLY THE FEASIBILITY OF THE PLAN, BUT ALSO PROVIDE AN ESTIMATE OF THETIME AND RESOURCES NEEDED TO DEVELOP REALISTIC WORK SCOPE AND COST ESTIMATES FOR PHASE II.
