Research abstract

Maintaining the nation’s defensive systems in peak readiness requires both diligence and broad support from the industrial base. Shifting priorities, changes in business focus, company or division closure, and lack of technical capability can all lead to loss of industrial base. This problem is amplified by the long service life of some systems such as the intercontinental ballistic missiles and the nuclear-powered submarine fleet. In some cases, the government does not have the industrial support necessary to keep these systems fully operational. The DLA has expressed a desire to qualify additional small businesses capable of producing these components and becoming an approved source of manufacture for products that have lost industrial base.
