Research abstract

The objective of this effort will be to develop a microwave applicator device which will provide concentrated heat energy to strip paint from composites, wood, and steel structures. This system will be designed to be portable and operate safely during the removal of paint. The applicator will be designed to remove paints from, helicopters, aircraft, ships, tanks, trucks, buildings and bridges and hydro electric power plant components such as locks and gates. During Phase I colorado Research & Engineering Inc. (CREI) will develop the design concepts necessary to produce concentrated microwave energy at the paint surface. The design will incorporate safety switches and sensors so that the device is safe to operate in the presence of workers and occupants. Design criteria will include the use of susceptor materials which may couple with the microwave energy for rapid heating and may also render lead to be nonhazardous to meet EPA requirements.
