Research abstract

70188 A need exists for a low voltage (less than 200 kV) 50 MW X-Band klystron as a primary radio frequency (RF) power source for future particle accelerators. Such a need can be satisfied by a low cost multiple beam klystron. This project will develop a multiple beam klystron capable of generating 50 MW of RF power at X-Band with a pulse greater than 2 microseconds. During Phase I, computational design codes will be extended to support multiple beam operation. Several circuit design configurations will be analyzed to determine those capable of providing the 50 MW of RF power at 11.424 GHz with efficiency greater than 50%. The optimum circuit designs will be used to generate preliminary mechanical designs of a complete multiple beam klystron, including electron gun, circuit, solenoid, collector, and input and output windows. In Phase II, a multiple beam klystron will be built using a multiple beam electron gun, now under construction. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: Multiple beam klystrons provide higher efficiency and greater bandwidth than single beam devices. Consequently, such devices are of interest for a number of defense applications, including radar and electronic counter measures. The device also would be applicable for scientific, medical, and industrial accelerators.
