Research abstract
Protolytic paint stripping minimizes spent materials. Laser and flashlamp based depainters have been developed and operate in the field. Laser based systems, however, are relatively complicated, costly and large, and have reliability issues. The flashlamp based system, Flashjet, is less complicated and costly, and is reliable, but it unsuitable as a portable depainter because it requires an adjunct dry ice stream to cool the underlying substrate and to prevent residue from being left behind. We propose to use Surface Discharge lamp technology to demonstrate photolytic depainting without the dry ice system and, based on this, to demonstrate the feasibility of a portable photolytic depainting system.
