Research abstract

Recent developments in laser radar focal plane arrays have opened the possibility for flood illuminated, single shot imaging. However, increased sensitivity and extension to IR wavelengths have become essential for the next generation systems. We propose to combine our expertise in image intensified detector design with an innovative upconverting phosphor material based on electron trapping to produce a new class of detector. This detector will be designed for direct interface to existing PIN diode based, laser radar receivers which incorporate bump bonded laser radar processors. The resulting Infrared Laser Radar Receiver Tube (IR-LRRT) will be a high resolution, high sensitivity system which will leverage existing programs for cost effective development. This IR-LRRT will be based on the optimal combination of microchannel plate (MCP) based intensifcatoin and upconverting materials at the input and output end. The inclusion of the MCP dramatically extends the low light level response range and the new upconverting material enables IR sensitivity while also retaining the high time resolution required for laser ranging. With this goal in mind, Phase I and Phase II represent stepping stones to demonstrate the concept and develop a viable version of the compound detector for the Air Force. Phase III development will be pursued under an existing collaboration with Eastman Kodak to produce systems for a variety of commercial applications.
