Research abstract
A need exists for collaborative simulation of military systems that exploit advances in network-based communications to improve simulation fidelity and system testing realism. LAN/WAN-based collaborative modeling of complex systems will allow forrepresentation by the best qualified modeler of system components, while permitting an entire community to derive the benefits of those models in systems representations. Availability of component libraries will permit design engineers to assemble virtualsystems by selecting appropriate sub-components, and verifying interoperability of interfaces, power requirements and performance HLA-based modeling of external stimuli and environment will allow for testing of systems and components while represented invirtual form. Developmental costs may be significantly reduced and developmental risks significantly mitigated by use of such a Virtual System Integration Laboratory (VSIL) concept. The opportunity presented by technology is to develop for the Army a capability to use the web to allow subsystem and component developers to model their own products (and potentially
