Research abstract

The production of high-volume chemicals from non-petroleum feedstocks is of great importance to the creation of a post-oil economy based on alternative and renewable sources. Fischer-Tropsch (FT) plants, especially those based on coal, may supply the necessary feedstock, mostly as FT naphtha, for making aromatic hydrocarbons. However, there is need for more effective processes for such FT-to-aromatics routes. To address this need, this project will design and prepare improved solid acid catalysts based on mixed metal oxides, such as advanced sulfated zirconia and related systems. In a preliminary study, these catalysts have shown promise in paraffin-to-aromatics and aromatic transformation reactions. Those catalysts that demonstrate the highest potential for integration into future coal-derived Fischer-Tropsch plants will be chosen for scale up and further development in Phase II. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: More efficient and environmentally friendly catalytic processes for converting alkanes to aromatics, and for transforming aromatics, should spur economic growth and create jobs. It potentially would create a billion-dollar business concentrated in rural States, helping rural communities improve their quality of life by providing sustainable economic growth.
