Research abstract

This Phase II program addresses the need for a fieldable system capable of detection and imaging of hidden damage in thick and complex geometry aircraft structures. This includes hidden cracks, corrosion and corrosion-fatigue. The Phase II program willbuild on the demonstrated feasibility of MWM-Array technology to detect buried cracks and hidden corrosion by further developing a three-dimensional imaging methodology. This will include both adaptation of enhanced sensor designs, including new segmentedfield MWM-Arrays, and further development of a consistent three-dimensional imaging methodology, including quantitative inversion methods. These inversion methods will focus on estimation and removal of interferences caused by the presence of complexgeometries and material property variations, such as from steel fasteners. This Phase II program will be complemented by ongoing JENTEK IR&D efforts that are focused on developing a fundamental new three-dimensional imaging capability for wide-rangingapplications. This program, however, will address two specific high priority Air Force applications, including at least one problem involving detection of hidden cracks in thick structures. A prototype system will be delivered at the conclusion of thisprogram that is configured to solve one specific high priority problem selected by the Air Force.
