Research abstract

This effort builds on initial feasiblity analysis and measurements taken to support concealed weapon detection. DSA proposes a nine month program consisting of two (2) items. Item 1 (6 months - 5 tasks) conducts CWD analysis, measurements, evaluation, system design and ends with the delivery of a draft Final Technical Report (Task 5). Item 2 (3 months - 1 task #6) refines and elaborates the information in the DRAFT FTR resulting in a comprehensive FTR covering the total period of performance (9 months - Items 1 and 2). Power level for the active radar transmissions are extremely low and will meet current established health/safety standards. Four related concepts (real aperture, tomographic, SAR and ISAR) are proposed for CWD. These concepts are designed to satisfy potential requirements of the military and law enforcement community while providing the implementation flexibility and extended range. Open (uncontrolled) and closed (some control) implementations of sensors are planned to accommodate various environments and user missions/scenarios. Tasks planned are: support CWD study and analysis, algorithm development, wideband radar measurements of weapons and background scenes and a CWD performance evaluation. Based on the results of the analysis, measurements and performance evaluations, a design concept for each of the four implementations would be performed to define sensor configurations which produce quality images at an affordable price. Within the item 1 investigations, DSA will determine feasibility of using select implementations for through-the-wall sensing. Results would be included in both the item 1 and 2 reporting.
