Research abstract

THIS PROJECT WILL ASSESS THE FEASIBILITY OF AN ULTRAHIGH PRESSURE (55,000 PSI) WATERJET SYSTEM FOR INTERNAL PIPE DECONTAMINATION. THIS AUTOMATED SYSTEM WILL BE USED TO REMOVE AN OXIDE FILM FROM THE INTERNAL DIAMETERS OF PIPING AT COMMERCIAL NUCLEAR POWERPLANTS. KEY FEATURES IN THE DESIGN OF THIS ROBOTIC CLEANING SYSTEM ARE OPTIMUM WATERJET PROCESS PARAMETERS, AN INTELLIGENT OPERATOR INTERFACE, A RELIABLE PROPULSION SYSTEM, A SYSTEM PACKAGED FOR REMOTE INSTALLATION AND HANDLING, AND SAFE OPERATION. AS PART OF THIS WORK, ULTRAHIGH-PRESSURE CLEANING TECHNOLOGY IS INTEGRATED WITH ADVANCED AUTOMATION AND CONTROLS TO PROVIDE A VERSATILE DECONTAMINATION SYSTEM. DURING PHASE I, THE CRITICAL COMPONENTS FOR THE SYSTEM ARE BEING IDENTIFIED AND DESIGNED. THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS WILL PROVIDE A BASIS FOR THE DETAILED DESIGN AND FABRICATION IN PHASE II.
