Research abstract

Ultra-Wideband High-Power Digital Fiber Optic Transmitter Laser Technical Abstract Modern military systems have ever-increasing bandwidth requirements for fiber optic communications. The optical transmitter in these systems employ Near Infrared (NIR) Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSEL) with ultra-wide modulation bandwidth and capable of delivering high optical power to multi-mode fibers.   Under the proposed Phase-I project, LUMEOVA will undertake a detailed design and feasibility study of the VCSEL suitable for operating at 50 Gbps NRZ in the 850-1000 nm wavelength region with greater than +10 dBm optical power.   The material structure and physical design of the VCSEL will be optimized using advanced simulation tools to deliver the required performance levels.  LUMEOVA is proposing a 6-month Phase-I Base program followed by a 6-month Phase-I Option program.   Under the Phase-I Base program, LUMEOVA shall conduct a feasibility study of the VCSEL design capable of delivering +10 dBm of optical power in the 850-1000 nm wavelengths at speed of 50 Gbps with NRZ bit stream.  LUMEOVA will also define the requirements for the driver IC to be designed under Phase-II.   Under the Phase-I Option, LUMEOVA shall design the module package integrating the VCSEL, driver IC and required optics to interface the VCSEL power efficiently to the 50um core optical fiber.
