Research abstract

Kent Displays Incrporated (KDI) propose to develop and fabricate a prototype high resolution 1/8 VGA reflective cholesteric liquidd crystal display (Ch-LCD) on plastic substrates with conducting polymer electodes. With a resolution of 100dpi, the display will retain advvantages of low power and high brightness charateristic of Ch-LCD's made with glass substrates but improves ruggedness, manufacturability, and weight provided by the plastic substrates with conducting polymer electrodes. The prototype will be packaged in a handheld device with conttrol circuitry to allow different images such as maps, text and graphics to be addressed onto the display. With the accomplishment of this Pase I program, expansion of this effort to follow up phases will result in displays with high frame rate, multiple color operation, and scale-up in fabrication and processing t pre-production levels. Founded in 1993, Kent display is uniquely qualified for his effort. The company hols exclusive rights to basic patents on Ch-LCD technology and currently manufactures and markets Ch-LCD's on glass substrates. Kent Displays works closely with the liquid Crystal Institute at Kent State University, a subcontractor, whre Ch-LCD technology was invented and developed.
