Research abstract

SITE, L.L.C. (SITE), as prime contractor with Georgia Tech Research Institute as subcontractor and Dr. Ferdy Mayer as consultant, proposes to investigate methods to extend the RF attentuation of absorptive filter line electric cable to the HF range. The main goal of the proposed effort will be to demonstrate the feasibility of achieving low-pass cutoff frequencies up to one decade lower than the attenuation with current technology i.e., MIL-C-85485A cable. Current lossy lines show absorptive frequency spectra which represent the image of the ferrite loss permeability spectra and can not be extended to the HF range because of a basic physical impossibility with available magnetic materials. Extension of loss performance will be done with additional lossy effects. During the project, theoretical considerations of different known and new loss effects as related to increasing the RF attenuation will be developed, modelizations (for coaxial implementations - assessing the compatibility with production processes used in wire and cable manufacturing and available connecting means) will be designed, and a cable test bed will be developed. A Phase 1 Option task will develop a fabrication method for sample cables that will facilitate Phase 2 development and test of production representative lossy lines.
