Research abstract

Water electrolyzers based on Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology are being targeted by the DOE to generate hydrogen for transportation and stationary applications. Currently, the membrane and electrode assemblies (MEAs) in these electrolyzer stacks must be measured for quality assurance before being incorporated into the high-value electrolyzer stack. However, no on-line or high-volume methods are currently available that can readily perform these inspections. Instead, a point-to-point inspection process is used, which lowers the production rate and raises manufacturing costs. To improve upon these limitations, this project will develop a hand-held rapid inspection tool for non-destructively evaluating and characterizing MEAs. The inspection tool will be based upon a proven method for assessing the catalytic behavior of reactive surfaces. In addition, the inspection tool will be amenable to high-speed throughput operations that will help lower the manufacturing cost. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Beyond the application to MEAs for electrolyzers and fuel cells, the sensing technology should find use in the characterization of reactive surfaces used in other industries. Such reactive surfaces include battery electrodes, industrial catalysts, and catalyst coated materials. In these markets, it is desired to assess the chemical activity of a reactive surface before the component is incorporated into a higher value product.
