Research abstract

As the Tactical Air Forces modernizes its C3I assets, there is an increasing need for high capacity, interoperable data storage media for tactical battlefield information display and collection systems. Optical disk drives and disk media are uniquely suited for this environment because of their durability and the flexibility associated with removable media for data distribution. However, the lack of DoD standardization on the means of defining Optical Disk Files inhibits using optical media as a universal medium for introperable data interchange. The recent development of the International Data Protocol Standard (ISO/IEC-13346) provides an opportunity to correct this. The goal of this proposal is to integrate and test a practical subset of this new international standard on the current Air Force Airborne Battlefield Command, Control, and Communications platform and related ground-based computerized tactical planning systems and to demonstrate tactical database interoperability.
