Research abstract

THIS PROPOSAL IS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR MATERIALS PROCESSING IN THE MATERIALS PROCESSING & MANUFACTURING CATEGORY UNDER THE SCOPE OF RESEARCH FOR DESIGN & MANUFACTURING SYSTEMS. THIS TECHNIQUE WILL BE DEMONSTRATED BY THE FABRICATION OF A COMPOSITE BN3SN SUPERCONDUCTOR AND WILL OFFER PROMISE OF GREATER ECONOMY IN MANUFACTURE AND IMPROVED PERFORMANCE. IN THIS TECHNIQUE A DUCTILE MATRIX CONTAINS PARTICLES OF A BRITTLE MATERIAL THATARE MADE TO DEFORM BY THE HYDROSTATIC FORCE IN THE DUCTILE MATRIX. THE MATERIAL IN WIRE FORM WILL BE HEATED BRIEFLY TOA TEMPERATURE ABOVE THE RECRYSTALLIZATION TEMPERATURE OF THEDUCTILE COMPONENT THAT WILL TRANSMIT THE DEFORMATION FORCE HYDROSTATICALLY TO THE BRITTLE COMPONENT. THE WIRE WILL BE HEATED AT DIE ENTRANCE, DEFORMED IN THE DIE, AND QUENCHED ATDIE EXIT. THE TIME AT TEMPERATURE FOR ANY POINT ON THE WIREWILL BE ONLY A FEW SECONDS AND UNDESIRED DIFFUSION WILL NOT OCCUR.
