Research abstract

Not Available There is an ever-growing need for thermal and environmental barrier coatings for applications in aerospace and defense industries. Such coating of aircraft fuselage, supersonic aircraft fuel tanks, cryogenic containers and munitions packages not only reduces the need for elaborate safety back-up systems, but also cuts down on wastes. The minimum general requirements for TEBCs and associated materials are: (i) lightweight, (ii) minimum bulk, (iii) very low thermal conductivity, and (iv) radiation resistance. Other special requirements include fluid and humidity resistance, adherence, low gloss in visible wavelengths, and reasonable electrical conductivity. State-of-the-art coating technology employs multi-layer and multi-material(polyurethane elastomers or silicone binder in combination with ZnO or MgO or other ceramic insulations) configurations that must be improved for performance, life, and versatility. LoTEC, Inc. proposes to develop a cost-effective, advanced coating material system that is non-outgassing, non-flammable, and has superior thermal insulation, environmental resistance, radiation stability, and noise-reduction characteristics. Thermal spraying deposition, which is an environmentally-benign coating process in which a polymer powder is injected into a flame or plasma, will be used to apply the coating. Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) will be used in conjunction with ceramic hollow microspheres (CHMs) to form the protective coating.
