Research abstract

In order to develop and test a combat system, it is often required to operate a subset of the system without some of the interfacing components. It is therefore necessary to simulate the operation of these missing components and to stimulate the existing interfaces with realistic and repeatable sensor and control data. This interface simulation is also necessary for training of operators, where tactical situations must be simulated in order to provide realistic training scenarios. The objective of this proposed Phase I effort is twofold. First, the requirements for combat system simulation/stimulation will be identified and a simulation/stimulation architecture that meets these requirements will be defined. This architecture will take maximum advantage of the Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS), Open System Architecture (OSA) components that are planned for the implementation of new combat systems and will be implemented by migration of existing simulation software, where possible. Secondly, a prototype subset of a combat system will be proposed for use as a test facility to verify the capabilities of the architecture. An optional task is proposed, which will result in a Phase 11 plan that covers specific configurations and test requirements.
