Research abstract

The lubrication systems used in current weapon systems is outdated technology containing varying degrees of hazardous chemicals. Also, current semi-fluid lubricants do not function in sand enviroments. To meet the tribological requirements of future and current weapon systems, improved performance of lubrication systems is needed particularly in a sand enviroment. A considerable amount of progress has been made in developing solid lubricants and wear resistance coatings for aerospace and industrial applications. Some of these lubricants and coatings may be suitable for weapon systems. However, the selection of solid lubricants is critical to specific applications. The major objectives of the Phase I proposal are to identify critical lubrication requirements in weapon systems, particularly in helicoper guns. Based on these solid lubricants, materials and coatings will be selected and tribological tests will be conducted to determine their performance and rank them for final gun tests in Phase II.
