Research abstract

A novel method that uses the measured electrical resistances of a composite structure only along the edges of the structure is proposed to monitor its health. The major advantage of the proposed innovation is that it is practical, it minimizeswiring/cabling and it does not require any additional sensors to be embedded within the composite. Not embedding sensors in the composite maintains the strength and integrity of the structure and reduces cost.In Phase II Mid¿ demonstrated on small-scale test articles the feasibility of the technology. In Phase II feasibility will be demonstrated on more complex composite structures, possibly on a fuselage section of the Comanche developed in the RWSTD program.Phase II will be an integrated SARAP and JASPO program. The ability to detect the health of composite structures in situ or during maintenance with a method that does not require any significant modifications to the composite enables the ability to cheaply monitor the structural health of composites. Theresearch will lead to two new products. The first is a suite of instrumentation products to be used by composite manufacturers. The second is diagnostic hardware/ software that will be sold to maintenance facilities. Using Bell Helicopter,Lockheed-Martin and Sikorsky as technology insertion advisors, will improve the chances of the technology being adopted by major airframe manufacturers.
