Research abstract

Most of the fabrication errors in optical systems lie in the low order modes such as focus, astigmatism and coma. Likewise, the largest aberrations in imaging systems from factors such as the atmosphere lie in the low order spatial modes. We propose the development of low-cost "flexible" mirrors whose corrections are tailored to this problem. We will substantially reduce the cost by the use of force instead of position actuators. There is a possibility of combining this concept with an interferometer to develop a radical new concept in high quality optical system manufacture.
