Research abstract

This program will demonstrate the engineering, manufacturing and economic feasibility of high speed conversion of alpha-beta titanium alloys to a homogeneous, fine grain, equiaxed alph-beta microstructure. When fully developed this newly discoveredmaterial conversion process will enable lower cost forgings with improved ultrasonic inspectability for titanium base superalloys. The benefits of successful implementation of this forging technology include the following: 1)Improved ultrasonicinspectability, 2) Improved material forgability, and 3)the ability to produce lower cost forgings with improved engineering properties. These benefits will directly apply to the aerospace OEM's and their end users the DoD and commercial airline companiesaround the world.
