Research abstract

We propose to analyze, design, and develop a frequency-agile high-power microwave (HPM) source. This source will be light-weight, compact, and efficient. It will be able to be tuned rapidly by varying only an external magnetic field. We have performed initial analyses which demonstrate a 20% tuning range with a fixed geometry. A much wider tuning range, including the possibility of accessing multiple frequency bands in a single device, can be achieved by incorporating mechanical tuning as well. The source can be optimized to operate at a center frequency from hundreds of MHz to at least 10 GHz. This source will be capable of pulse durations and repetition rates that are limited only by prime power and power conditioning constraints. The source can use a high-purveyance electron beam, which minimizes system voltages. For example, a GW-class device would use a 250-keV electron beam. The basic principles that are required to realize this source have been experimentally demonstrated and verified with theory and computer simulations. During Phase I, we will perform additional analyses, simulations, and design studies, including the engineering and design of all critical components, to develop an optimized prototype configuration that can be built and tested during Phase II.
