Research abstract

The goal of this program is to design, build, and test a cart-portable UXO and land mine detector with tethered, hand-held wands for scanning the ground. The detector will be based upon nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) technology, a variant of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology which does not require an applied magnetic field and has high chemical specificity. The UXO/land mine detector will initially be designed and built to detect RDX-based explosives, but will be upgradeable to TNT-based explosives as the technology evolves. Phase I will consist of a comprehensive laboratory study and analysis of the relationship between enclosed-volume NQR detection of explosives and single-sided NQR detection of explosives. The laboratory tests will be carried out at field-level concentrations in the presence of common environmental interferents, and will provide all of the information needed to design a prototype UXO/land mine detection system.
