Research abstract

As greater numbers of systems compete for limited telemetry resources, measures must be taken to increase the utilization of the available spectrum. Fortunately, recent advances in communications systems and protocols can provide a dramatic increase in the utilization of allocated radio frequency spectrum. The best solution for the telemetry community requires that several areas of advanced technology be merged together to form an efficient, reliable system for data transfer. This proposal outlines areas of communication technology which can be merged to form a state-of-the-art telemetry system and allow for the continued use of legacy data systems. SRC will investigate all areas of RF communications sytems, including modulation schemes, communications protocols, and data compression techniques. Additonally, multiple access techniques such as frequency division (FDMA), code division (CDMA), and demand assignment (DAMA) will be investigated to provide the best solution for a multi-user environment. Based on this investigation, SRC will recommend a system design that will best meet the current and future requirements of the telemetry community.
