Research abstract
We propose to develop ocean sensor components which will harmlessly biodegrade in a marine environment after performing their designed functions. These biodegradable components will meet or exceed performance requirements of existing non-biodegradable components. Our technical approach combines our vast experience with biodegradable and advanced high performance polymer processing with the expertise of leading expendable sonobuoy manufacturers. The properties of biodegradable polymers will be tailored to meet the requirements of selected sonobuoy components. We will apply our proprietary blending technology to achieve the desired performance which can vary from part to part. Issues such as flexibility (parachute), strength (structural members) and hermiticity (enclosures) will drive the formulation for each sensor component. These newly engineered components will maintain the required properties during storage (up to five years) and during the operating life of the sonobuoy, but will biodegrade within one year after scuttling to the ocean floor. In Phase I we will assess the types of expendable sensors currently in use, and analyze a specific sonobuoy for biodegradable component fabrication. Preliminary testing of biodegradable polymers will be performed, and a cost/performance analysis will aid in the selection of components for development and demonstration.
