Research abstract
Propose to undertake research to establish the feasibility of generating 400 Hz AC using an SRM generator/cyclonconverter. Feasibility of this concept will be established in two phases. In the first phase a computer model of the switched reluctance machine and the converter/cycloconverter will be developed. During the modeling process the control algorithms required to generate 400 Hz AC using the SRM generator will also be developed. In the second phase of research, a SRM generator system capable of generating 400 Hz AC will be designed and fabricated in the 40 kW - 60 kW level. System testing of this SRM generator will establish the credibility of the computer model and allow the computer model to be used confidently to predict the performance of any proposed 400 Hz AC SRM generator system. In addition the fabricated SRM generator system will demonstrat the feasbility of generating 400 Hz AC using an SRM generator/cycloconverter. A baseline specification for the SRM test system will be established using a retrofit plan for the F-16 generating system.
