Research abstract
For most security systems covering large facilities, the initial detection is the easiest part of the surveillance problem. Once alerted to a possible intrusion, response personnel often must physically challenge human intruders to verify the intruder as authorized or unauthorized. The authentication procedure varies but commonly employs either verbal challenge or visual inspection of a badge or other documentation. During this challenge, an electro-optic or infrared surveillance camera is often employed to monitor the proceedings. From a remotely positioned camera, however, it is difficult or impossible to distinguish the response team personnel from the intruders. Without this knowledge, it may be difficult to assess a situation and react properly to it. Some type of detection system is therefore required that can be used on conjunction with the camera system to remotely identify response personnel and distinguish them from possible intruders. To solve this problem, ISI proposes a program to develop a low cost innovative concept to identify human intruders in restricted areas with the following goals: 1. The analysis and specification of system requirements. 2. Generation and feasibility analysis of system concepts. 3. Technical risk reduction and demonstration of the concept.
