Research abstract

PARALLEL PROCESSING OFFERS NEW AND EXCITING POSSIBILITIES IN THE AREA OF COMPUTATIONAL FLUID DYNAMICS (CFD). THIS PROJECT DEVELOPS A GENERAL-PURPOSE PARALLEL SOFTWARE PACKAGE FOR PERFORMING LARGE SCALE FLUID DYNAMICS AND HEAT TRANSFER CALCULATIONS OF INTEREST TO INDUSTRY AND TO GOVERNMENT LABORATORIES. THE RESEARCH ADDRESSES SEVERAL DISCIPLINES CRUCIAL TO EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF MODERN COMPUTER ARCHITECTURES: NUMERICAL ALGORITHMS, PARALLEL IMPLEMENTATION, GRAPHICS, AND HANDLING OF LARGE DATA SETS. PHASE I INCORPORATES THESE PARALLEL ADVANCES INTO THE SPECTRAL ELEMENT GENERAL-GEOMETRY CFD CODE NEKTON AND THEREBY EVALUATES THE SCALINGS AND INTERACTIONS OF THESE DISCIPLINES IN A REALISTIC CFD ENVIRONMENT. PHASE I ALSO DEMONSTRATES THE RESULTS AND SCALINGS ON THE INTEL IPSC/860 HYPERCUBE, A MEDIUM GRAINED MULTIPLE INSTRUCTION, MULTIPLE DATA MACHINE, AND DEVELOPS THIS CFD SOFTWARE IN A MANNER APPROPRIATE FOR ADVANCED PARALLEL SUPERCOMPUTERS SUCH AS THE INTEL TOUCHSTONE SERIES AND SIMILAR ARCHITECTURES.
