Research abstract

Ceramic matrix composite (CMC) components can enable the Navy to increase the operating temperatures of aircraft engines and increase the thrust to weight ratio. Apart from mechanical and thermal loadings Naval aircraft engine components are also subject to hot corrosion. Limited design data regarding hot corrosion, oxidation, mechanical fatigue, thermal fatigue, and thermomechanical fatigue of CMCs are available. A critical need exists for the Navy to develop a CMC durability model and life prediction methodology for CMC component design. Triton Systems proposes to fulfill the Navy's need by developing a durability model and life prediction methodology for CMC components. The durability model will he supported by a readily accessible, comprehensive CMC database generated by Triton Systems. This database will include data on hot corrosion behavior, oxidation, mechanical fatigue, thermal fatigue and thermomechanical fatigue. Elemental models for corrosion, oxidation and fatigue will be developed. verified and incorporated into the durability model.
