Research abstract

The objective of the Phase I proposed program is to consummate a design of a high speed and high temperature counter-rotating intershaft seal for aviation turbine engines. The target conditions are 1200 ft/s surface velocity, 1OOOF air temperature and 50 psid pressure differential. Phase II and III of the program would accomplish qualification testing and engine demonstration. The methodology of the Phase I effort is to generate several concept designs, screen them by preliminary analysis and a figure of merit study and complete detailed analysis and design of one selected concept. The figure of merit study would consider performance, reliability, maintainability, life and cost. The detailed analysis of the selected concept will yield interfacial performance, dynamic response and thermo-elastic distortions, from which geometric iterations can be made to produce a high confidence design. CAD assembly and manufacturing drawings of the final configuration will be completed. A test and evaluation plan for Phase II testing will also be produced.
