Research abstract
The objective of this research proposal is to explore the application of modern signal processing and controller design techniques to successfully engage low-observable and highly maneuverable threats. MRLets will develop and test a set of adaptive fire control algorithms -- referred to collectively as the Target-Oriented Robust Tracking and Guidance (TORTAG) system -- which are optimized to the assumed target type, engagement geometry, and estimated error sources. This fire control concept will take maximum advantage of additional a priori information available to the modern warfighter from systems such as the Navy's Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC). Efficient implementations of tracking, robust control, and template-based target recognition algorithms will be realized by exploiting the temporal and spatial compression features of wavelet transforms. In Phase I, the TORTAG system will be prototyped in the Matlab numerical visualization environment and its performance compared to conventional guidance and control for a 3 DOF missile model. The TORTAG concept will result in enhanced weapon system performance, reduced danger of fratricide, and reduced cost over multiple munitions deployment alternatives.
