Research abstract

ADVANCED STRUCTURAL MATERIALS USED IN THE FABRICATION OF SUBMARINES CAN SUSTAIN LARGE STRAINS DURING THE FORMATION PROCESS CAUSED BY EXPLOSIVE LOADINGS. THE COMPUTATIONAL SOLID MECHANICS COMMUNITY HAS RECENTRLY RECOGNIZED SERIOUS SHORTCOMINGS IN CALCULATIONS USING MATERIAL MODELS IN THIS LARGE STRAIN REGION. BECAUSE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF CALCULATIONS IN UNDERSTANDING THE SHOCK RESPONSE OF SUBMARINES, IT IS IMPERATIVE TO CORRECT THIS DIFFICULTY. THE AIM OF THIS WORK IS TO ESTABLISH A CORRECT COMPUTATIONAL TREATMENT FOR FINITE ELEMENT ELASTO-PLASTIC SHELL ANALYSIS AND TO QUANTITATIVELY EVALUATE THE CONSEQUENCES OF IMPLEMENTING SUCH A TREATMENT INTO THE EPSA-II SOFTWARE.
