Research abstract

79082S High order modes in radio-frequency accelerating cavities typically degrade the performance of high-energy colliders, and consequently a significant effort is put into eliminating or strongly damping these modes. Photon band gap structures are a novel and promising approach to this problem, and integrated analysis tools that can draw on parallel computing resources are needed to accelerate the development of new structures. To address this need, this project will create a specialized design environment within a commercial analysis tool. In addition to integrating necessary tools, the environment will automate many of the common modeling functions required for the design of new photon band gap structures. In Phase I, the specialized environment will be encapulated within the simulation toolkit. The toolkit will contain model templates for creating the complex geometry of photon band gap structures, and it will also support specialized analysis sequences for designing photon band gap lattices, cavities, power input couplers, and slow-wave structures. Transparent access to electromagnetic solvers running on clusters and parallel computers will enable important design computations that are not currently possible for these devices. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new design environment should greatly simplify the iterative design and optimization of new structures based on photon band gap materials/structures. In addition to commercial accelerators, photon band gap materials are also being investigated for application in telecommunications and computer components. These applications will provide an additional commercial outlet for the software.
