Research abstract

THE MODELING AND CALCULATION OF SUPERSONIC TURBULENT REACTING FLOWS ARE CONSIDERED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT ACCURATE PREDICTION OF SUCH FLOW FIELDS DEPENDS ON A THERMOCHEMICAL MODEL THAT, WHILE BEING SIMPLE, CAN ACCOUNT FOR DOMINANT TIME SCALES INVOLVED IN THE REACTION AND A TURBULENCE MODEL CAPABLE OF PREDICTING THE EFFECTS OF COMPRESSIBILITY AND HEAT RELEASE. THIS PROPOSAL PRESENTS A METHOD OF MODELING SUPERSONIC COMBUSTION THROUGH THE USE OF PROBABILITY DENSITY FUNCTION OF SCALARS IN THE REACTION. THE EFFECTS OF COMPRESSIBILITY AND HEAT RELEASE IN THE TURBULENT KINETIC ENERGY AND LENGTH SCALES ARE STUDIED BY ANALYSIS OF EXACT PRESSURE AND VORTICITY EQUATIONS. PHASE IOF THE WORK CONCENTRATES ON THE ANALYSIS OF THE PROPERTIES OF PRESSURE FLUCTUATIONS AND DEVELOPMENT OF A SECOND-ORDER TURBULENCE CLOSURE MODEL. ALSO A SPECIFIED PDF MODEL WILL BE USED TO RELATE THE LOCAL THERMODYNAMIC STATE TO A SINGLE CONSERVED SCALAR FOR AN EQUILIBRIUM CHEMICAL REACTION. THESE MODELS WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN A TWO DIMENSIONAL NAVIER-STOKES SOLVER AND APPLIED TO SEVERAL TEST CASES. PHASE II OF THIS WORK WILL EXTEND THESE MODELS TO NONEQUILIBRIUM SUPERSONIC TURBULENT REACTING FLOWS BY MODELING AND SOLVING THE TRANSPORT EQUATION OF THE PDF OF SEVERAL SCALARS.
