Research abstract

Foveal sensors with graded acuity coupled with context sensitive gaze control are highly optimized for active vision applications in scenarios with localized relevance, compared to uniform acuity passive/active vision systems. Foveal sensors are computationally motivated and at the same time utilizes unique attributes of biological vision. Wide field-of-view (FOV) and central high acuity are simultaneously supported while minimizing data to that which is relevant to the task. The proposed program will refine and advance the design of a rectilinear acuity gradient-based foveal sensor with dynamic and adaptive receptive fields; by supporting greater bandwidth reduction with multiband data; and by incorporating efficient adaptive preprocessing operators in receptive field profiles. Receptive field design will be based on coarse space generation strategy of algebraic multigrid technique, and can be of value for log-polar foveal sensor development also. Acuity profile for multiband data will be determined based on human vision paradigm. Adaptive smoothing-based contrast enhancement, and Zernike moment-based feature measurement techniques will be developed for foveal sensors.
