Research abstract
In a number of IR target-detection systems a small instantaneous field of view (IFOV) of the image sensor is required in order that the target be reliably detected against clutter. A modification (called Spatial Modulation) of the image sensor is proposed by which each IFOV sample or output pixel, is a measure -- not of the average of the scene intensity over the IFOV -- but of the high spatial-frequency content of the scene over the IFOV. In this way the high spatial frequency information needed for target detection in clutter can be obtained with a much larger IFOV, and many fewer pixels, than would otherwise be necessary.
