Research abstract

In recent years, advancements in RF receiver hardware have significantly increased the potential data rates, enabling the capture of vast amounts of information across the RF spectrum. This surge in data volume, while beneficial, presents a substantial challenge for downstream processing systems, which are often overwhelmed by the sheer volume of incoming data. Ultra-wideband signal processing, with bandwidths spanning several gigahertz, produces data streams that can quickly exceed the storage and processing capacities of traditional systems. This is particularly problematic for time-sensitive applications, where prompt and accurate processing of critical information is essential. As the RF environment becomes more complex and dynamic, the ability to selectively focus on key portions of the spectrum has become crucial. Without a sophisticated mechanism to prioritize and manage these key portions of the high-throughput data streams, systems risk being inundated with irrelevant or low-priority information, leading to inefficiencies and potential mission failures. The need for a context-aware, self-learning pre-processing solution is evident, as it would enable the identification and prioritization of high-value portions of data inputs, ensuring that limited computational and storage resources are allocated to the most critical information. Such a solution must dynamically adapt to evolving mission requirements, continuously learning and improving its ability to distinguish and process the most relevant data in real time. This capability is vital for maintaining the effectiveness and reliability of RF data processing systems in increasingly data-heavy and time-sensitive operational contexts. The proposed solution leverages the integration of a Context-Aware Rapid Spectrum Analysis (CARSA) that efficiently prioritizes bands of interest in a very high-rate RF data stream and a Forensic Memory System (FMS) that manages a high-speed circular buffer and sub-band channelized data retrieval capability, both of which have demonstrated effectiveness on existing programs for wideband spectrum awareness. These two blocks are connected via the Prioritized Utility Function Framework (PUFF) with a Dynamic Weight Adjustment Mechanism (DWAM), which is designed to dynamically prioritize data processing tasks based on the system’s current resource availability, FMS processing limits, mission-critical requirements and the outputs of CARSA. This sophisticated prioritization ensures that only the most relevant portions of the RF spectrum are processed, optimizing the use of limited computational and storage resources.
