Research abstract

Use of optical processing has been limited in part due to complex manufacturing requirements and bulky packaging. Our goal is to develop a practical generic technology for the manufacture of two-dimensional optical signal processing systems in planar optics. Our primary focus will be on the use of diffractive optical elements (DOEs) and ferroelectric liquid crystal spatial light modulators (FLC-SLMs) along wit the necessary light sources and detectors. FLC-SLMs meet requirements of the solicitation (kHz frame rates, scalability to 1000x1000 pixels) and the use of DOEs offers the flexibilty and ease of assembly needed for a cost effectivwe generic technology. We will also plan for the use of active devices such as SEEDs and quantum wells. Our Phase I objectives are: (1) identify crucial technial issues in the use of DOEs for planar optical systems through design, fabrication, and test of key optics, (2) identify and address crucial issues in module assembly and component mounting through experimentation with key manufacturing steps, (3) test key performance parameters of electro-optic components available in Phase I, and (4) develop a preliminary design and manufacturing process for a Phase II planar optical processor. Our choices of components and manufacturing processes will be strongly influenced by their cost and ease of manufacture.
