Research abstract
Rechargeable lithium batteries with high specific energy and long cycle life will have applications to portable computers and communication devices, such as cellular telephones. A key problem with lithium-polymer batteries has been the instability of the lithium electrode-polymer electrolyte interface. The objective of the proposed program is to develop significantly improved polymer technology which will enhance the stability of the interface and thereby lead no longer cycle life. The polymer technology will be incorporated into thin film rechargeable lithium cells which have have potential to leapfrog existing technology in both energy storage capacity and cycle life. Anticipated Benefits: The project will lead to rechargeable lithium batteries with enhanced cycle life for portable electronic devices, both civilian and government. The new generastion of rechargeable batteries will result in lighter weight and longer operational time of battery powered electronic devices.
