Research abstract

40927 November 18, 1996 Chemica Technologies, Inc. Separation processes for removal of heavy metals from contaminated water is needed for site remediation at DOE facilities. Conventional adsorbent technologies have limitations that preclude their widespread use in the treatment of metal-contaminated wastewater. Specifically, many adsorbents lack capacity, selectivity, and robustness. The objective of this work is to develop practical fiber-based adsorbents for the selective recovery of heavy metals from contaminated water. Regenerable adsorbent fibers will be developed that have high capacity and selectivity for heavy metals and are chemically robust. In Phase I, feasibility will be demonstrated by fabricating a series of these fiber-based adsorbents, incorporating them into small-scale modules, and testing them extensively for recovery of heavy metals from contaminated water. Phase II will optimize the process for specific separations, make larger-scale modules, and conduct pilot-scale studies. Anticipated Results/Potential Commercial Applications as described by the awardee: This fiber-based adsorbent technology should result in an efficient and cost-effective process for the recovery of heavy metals from contaminated water. The process should find widespread use at DOE facilities, mining operations, and the chemical process industry.
