Research abstract

A portable device for neurological function testing in remote settings is proposed. The device will utilize various evoked potential analysis technologies. Evoked potentials providing a reasonably comprehensive neurological evaluation include the auditory brainstem response (ABR), the somatonsensory evoked potential (SEP), and the flash visual evoked potential (VEP). The ABR provides an objective measure of auditory nerve and brainstem function from acquired scalp potentials in response to presentation of auditory clicks. The SEP measures neurological function of peripheral nerves, the spinal cord, and the brain from head and other surface electrode recordings of responses to extremity electrode stimulation. The flash VEP measures optical and neural function from scalp electrode recordings of responses to light stimuli. A device capable of performing these neurological function tests, with the added capability of providing rapid, automated diagnostic assistance, could be used by medical personnel to deliver early, definitive treatment for the causative disease process. Additionally, this device could be used to monitor general neurological status in compromised individuals, for instance during operative procedures or in intensive care units. Rapid diagnosis and treatment reduce the morbidity and mortality of neurological disease, including trauma.
