Research abstract

THIS PROJECT HAS TWO OBJECTIVES. THE FIRST OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP AN EMPIRICAL MODEL OF HOSPITAL UTILIZATION THAT CAN BE USED BY RURAL COMMUNITIES AND HOSPITALS TO ASSESS HOSPITAL-BED NEEDS IN A COMMUNITY AND TO ASSIST IN LONG-RANGE PLANNING. THIS MODEL WILL RELATE HOSPITAL UTILIZATION TO THE SOCIOECONOMIC AND DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE POPULATION, THE AVAILABILITY OF SUBSTITUTE SERVICES, AND OTHER FACTORS FELT TO HAVE AN IMPACT ON DEMAND AND SUPPLY OF SERVICES. THE SECOND OBJECTIVE IS TO DEVELOP AN EMPIRICAL MODEL OF RURAL HOSPITALCOSTS PER PATIENT DAY. SPECIFICALLY, THE STUDY WILL INCORPORATE FLUCTUATIONS IN OCCUPANCY RATES AND VOLUME OF SELECTED SERVICES ON THE COST PER DAY OF CARE.
