Research abstract

ONE OF THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAYS TO INCREASE THE CAPACITY OF MOBILE CELLULAR COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS IS TO USE SPATIAL DIVERSITY BY EMPLOYING ANTENNA ARRAYS. A NOVEL TECHNIQUE IS BEING DEVELOPED FOR SEPARATING MULTIPLE CO-CHANNEL SIGNALS BY USING A SMALL ARRAY OF ANTENNAS. THE TECHNIQUE INVOLVES THE PARAMETRIC MODELING OF THE FM/PM SIGNALS IMPINGING ON THE ARRAY, AND MAKES USE OF BOTH SPATIAL AND TEMPORAL INFORMATION TO SEPARATE THE SIGNALS. EFFICIENT ESTIMATION OF THE MODEL PARAMETERS IS ACHIEVED BY USING THE RECENTLY DEVELOPED DISCRETE POLYNOMIAL TRANSFORM (DPT)-A NONLINEAR TRANSFORM FOR ESTIMATING THE PARAMETERS OF MULTI-COMPONENT POLYNOMIAL PHASE SIGNALS. PRELIMINARY RESULTS INDICATE EXTREMELY RAPID CONVERGENCE OF THIS TECHNIQUE COMPARED TO SIGNAL SELECTIVE TECHNIQUES WHICH ARE BASED ON STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF THE SIGNALS. THE PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A DPT-BASED SIGNAL-SELECTIVE ARRAY PROCESSING TECHNIQUE FOR SEPARATING 2 OR 3 SIGNALS, AND STUDY ITS PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS BY ANALYSIS AND COMPUTER SIMULATION.
