Research abstract
G hardened GPS and guidance systems represent a significant increase in capability within Naval Surface Fire Support. Exploitation of this technology requires combining these guidance systems with compact, high performance, low cost control actuators. This proposal leverages the work currently being performed under SBIR contract N00178-95-C-3027 Low Cost Control System Components for Guided Projectiles and applies these technologies to a projectile being developed for the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA). Versatron has teamed with SAIC, the DNA projectile prime, to ensure a compatible control section design. SAIC will supply requirements and support trade studies for packaging, and interfaces. The key technologies required to meet the objectives of this SBIR are as follows: Objective Enabling Technology Compact -Single stage "flexible screw" reduction system High Performance -Rare earth permanent magnet servo motor -Micro processor based loop closure Low Cost -All digital surface mount electronics -High strength, injection molded composites. Our current SBIR has demonstrated breakthrough performance and cost savings compared to traditional control systems. We will continue to emphasize low unit cost in this application of those technologies.
