Research abstract

The complexity and sheer magnitude of modern computer systems including systems, sensors and weapons require that a disciplined structured approach be employed for their development. The principal objective of the system development process is to establish a design which satisfies the system requirements and constraints while optimising the key trade-offs and issues associated with system functionality, behavior, and implementation. A key aspect of representing a complex computer based system design is the methodology employed to represent the real-time behavior of the system under design. This project will establish an adv for capturing behavior for a large, complex, real-time, computer-based this multi-domain system design capture and analysis methodology. This approach addresses three key aspects of representing complex system beh top level system behavior as observed externally (i.e. system as a blac real-time behavior of the system logical design options (i.e. control, timing, and synchronization aspects of the system functions and data without regard implementation in resources), and (3) real-time behavior of the system design options (i.e. response time, delays, queue lengths, and other as system behavior as embodied in the hardware, software and human resourc architectures). This Phase I SBIR project will: (1) leverage ongoing re refine a design capture methodology for representing complex real-time behavior and (2) demonstrate key aspects of an advanced CASE tool proto supporting this methodology. The prototype CASE tool will be created to critical items in the design and to demonstrate the feasibility of the tool development under Phase II.
