Research abstract

The feasibility of developing a reserve, lithium thionyl chloride battery that combines both high power and high energy is examined. Highly acid electrolytes with halogen catalysts and blended and/or layered carbon cathodes will be studied at current densities up to 250mA/cm and at temperatures from -20 to 60 degrees C. A bipolar reserve cell configuration will be designed to verify that SBIR power (400W/lb) and energy (80W/lb) requirements are met.
