Research abstract

Model-based electron accelerator control systems are used to maintain the parameters of an electron beam ¿ such as its orbit, size, and shape ¿ at their optimum values. These systems work well when the model reflects reality. However, an inherently complex problem still remains: these systems use complex numerical algorithms, commonly known as nonlinear solvers that are difficult to control and operate. Recently, a new, simple-to-use, nonlinear solver has been developed at SLAC. This project will further develop and validate this nonlinear solver, which not only would improve the control accelerators and storage rings but also would have applicability to a wide range of complex engineering problems. In Phase I, the performance of the new solver¿s convergence parameters will be analyzed and compared with existing SLAC lattice modeling codes. In Phase II, the new nonlinear solver will be implemented into a prototype code that will be capable of finding global solutions to accelerator error-resolving problems. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The new non-linear solver would be used to efficiently resolve accelerator errors in U.S. synchrotron light sources (or high-brightness X-ray laboratories), thereby increasing the up-time of complex facilities that currently serve thousands of users from all scientific and engineering fields. The new tool also should have many commercial applications, e.g., as a math-solution software toolkit and as a solver for complex engineering systems.
