Research abstract

Our objective is to determine the feasibility of, and optimal design for,the incorporation of a large body of formalized common sense knowledge intoan information integration, filtering, and dissemination tool, in support ofa multi-force coalition. With this substrate of knowledge, it is possible toidentify relationships between data points, to understand the meaning ofinformation across changing contexts and varied sources, and to recognize thesignificance of information across multiple contexts and users. Specificknowledge-based technologies to be applied include Cycorp's methodsfor representation of, and reasoning about, knowledge contexts, diversedata sources and their contents, data anomalies, and activities and plans. The application will support collaborative use of distributed informationby integrating information from distributed sources, filtering informationby significance, and distributing information to those for whom it is relevant.Intelligent information integration, filtering, and dissemination promisesto reduce the need for human data filtering, enable users to benefit fromdistributed knowledge, and address the critical problem of getting theright information to the right person at the right time. Incorporation of alarge body of formalized common sense knowledge enables understanding of,and reasoning about, both the context of information and the informationitself. That understanding may well give information integration, filtering, and dissemination the depth and robustness needed to effectivelysupport command decision-making, breaking through the barrier ofinformation overload.
